Holmfirth Business launches ‘Buy or Bye-Bye’ campaign

Posted on Monday, March 25, 2024

Holmfirth Pet Centre Founder & Owner Jon has taken it upon himself to launch a campaign reminding us just how important shopping locally can be to our community. In Holmfirth alone, there are nearly 5,000 residents (based on 2021 census). If each person allocated a £5 spend locally each month (groceries, children’s supplies, services etc.) this would bring an additional £25,000 per month into the local community.

A lot of discussion over the last couple of years has been about the future for local shops.

A ‘perfect storm’ of the covid lockdown leading to an increase in online shopping, the economic downturn with more people watching budgets, hefty increases in retailers’ overheads and cost of goods has all made an impact especially in small towns like Holmfirth.

Some businesses are doing well, whilst others are just managing to keep their heads above water.

High interest rates and poor weather may also contributed a downturn in trade.

It was with this background that Jon decided to create a small campaign to highlight the importance of supporting your local shops and businesses.

Local businesses tend to be family run and staffed by people who live in the local area, not multiple chains where it’s all about the bottom line and not about people.

Local businesses know the area and will often go the extra mile to give great service as well as knowing many of their customers and their families by name.

Local businesses support each other, and together create a unique shopping experience.

Jon commented: “In Holmfirth we have something really special, but like many other things in life, we will only realise that when its gone. Whilst sadly we have lost some shops, there are some new, exciting ventures starting up.

But they need our support.

Supporting your local businesses means much more than a shopping choice.

You are creating jobs for young people, putting money into the area you live in and helping create a long-term place we all would like to live in and be part of”.

Jon is asking us all to consider if we can contribute just a small proportion of your household spend to be more local. Could you buy bread from Bluebird Bakery and Vegetables from Andrews Greengrocers or the local market (Thursdays and Saturdays in the Coop car park), or pet food from The Holmfirth Pet Centre and books from Read?

There are so many lovely eateries, treatment providers, boutiques, service providers and so much more right on our doorstep.
