5 things to do in and around Holmfirth this spring

25th Apr, 2019

We may be a little biased – as Holmfirth is the home of Applegate Properties HQ – but we love this small town and everything in it.

There truly is something for everyone – whether you love walking, shopping or eating and drinking! With so many things to do and visit, here are our top five…

Summer Wine exhibition

If you’re a fan of this classic British sitcom, the exhibition is definitely worth getting involved with. It incorporates a visit to Compo’s House – as featured in the TV series – which has original props and photos, along with a timeline of the whole series from start to finish.

Fun fact – there were 295 episodes of Last of the Summer Wine, which ended (sadly) in 2010!

Ashley Jackson Museum

For those of you who love art, why not visit the home of the internationally-renowned Yorkshire watercolour artist – Ashley Jackson. Born and bred in this beautiful village, the exclusive gallery contains original paintings, limited editions and prints.

“You never truly own an Ashley Jackson original, you merely take care of it for the next generation” – something we think is quite magical!

Holmfirth vineyard

A great spot to enjoy when the sun is shining is the vineyard. Not only can you sample the locally grown wine, but you can also enjoy some beautiful food, have a tour of the grounds, indulge in afternoon tea or purchase beautiful gifts – all while taking in the breathtaking view!

If you’re looking to treat a loved one they also have rooms available, so you can stay over and make a weekend of it.

Digley Reservoir

Everyone loves walking – whether it’s taking your dog out for a stroll, or getting some Sunday fresh air – there’s nothing better than getting outdoors! This picturesque lake is alongside the start of the Peak District trail in Kirklees, which continues adjacent to the shoreline – before exploring the surrounding countryside.

There are routes for all levels of walkers – so if you’re looking for a serious hike, or a gentle wander, this is the perfect place to go.

Our final spot in our top five list, has to go to the new book shop, Read! Located a stones throw away from Mr Jackson’s museum, the store is the best place to pick up a new book. It has dedicated rooms for both adult and children’s novels, with a huge range to choose from.

So, next time you’re planning a day trip out or passing through the village, make sure you stop by at least one of the hot spots we’ve mentioned above!
