Building your own self-care kit

Posted on Tuesday, May 24, 2022

Among the myriad of responsibilities that we as humans often balance — work, household tasks, finances, relationships, and more — wellbeing can sometimes slip to the bottom of the priority list.

And, often the days when life gets on top of us and we need self-care the most also tend to be the moments when we feel the least motivated to seek it out for ourselves. So, having a pre-packed box of items that can soothe the situation can help no end.

Put simply, a self-care kit is a collection of items that make you feel good. And, while there’s a whole lot more to this than a beauty regime or an at-home spa day, carving out time for certain activities can help to reset and recharge both your body and mind at the opportune moment.

Typically speaking, the ideal collection will be made up of a mix covering emotional, physical, mental, social, practical, and spiritual self-care. Of course, what you choose to store away is totally subjective, however, here are some suggestions to get you started on improving your wellbeing.

 1. Journaling

Diaries are an excellent process for those who feel their thoughts and emotions tend to run away with them. At the times when everything gets on top of you, it can help to write everything down on paper — and return to the page in a different mindset for a moment’s reflection.

2. Positive affirmations

Print your own or buy a selection of affirmation cards as a tool for appreciation to encourage self-love. Alternatively, write a loved one a letter or note about how you feel towards them — a great way to remind yourself of what’s important to you.

3. Money for social outings

Leave some cash in your self-care box for a rainy day. There’s nothing like a special outing with a friend, family member, or even alone to draw yourself out of a low point and make a lasting memory.

4. Puzzles or brain teasers

Jigsaw puzzles, crosswords, sudokus, or colouring books are effective distraction methods which help to keep the brain active and engaged. And, if you haven’t already discovered the Wordle movement currently sweeping the nation, we recommend giving it a go!

5. Fragrances

Scent is a very powerful and emotive force — citrus notes in particular have been linked to reducing stress and boosting energy and alertness. Select your candle, reed diffuser, or essential oil of choice and notice the calming influence it can have, right when you need it most.

6. Hair and skin care

Indulging in a luxurious hair or face mask can help to revive and replenish. And, if it has notes of your favourite fragrance, even better!

7. Tasty treats

Finally, store away a selection of sweets, chocolate, savoury snacks, and anything edible that takes your fancy to round off your perfect self-care evening.

Alternatively, if you’d prefer to avoid the DIY approach, there are a number of companies that offer a subscription service — delivering pick-me-up items to your door on a regular basis. As a starter for ten, try BirchBox, Retreat, The Calm Club, Bathbox and Melt.
